If you’ve been following the blog tutorials here, then you’re already able to draw an anime face and head front view from a previous guide. In this tutorial you’re going to learn how to draw anime heads from a three quarter angle.
Drawing anime heads at an angle, like the three quarter view, can be a bit of a challenge at first. This is mainly because the features on the side of the head that is turned away are either hidden or foreshortened, that is,one of the ears may not be visible and the nose does not appear to be in the middle of the face. Also, depending on how much turned away the head is, the eyes may not look completely identical in shape or size. The farther away that part of the head is turned, the smaller that eye will appear.
If anything above sounds complicated, don’t worry because here on manga tuts we aim to make things easier. Just follow the technique outlined below in this anime head tutorial and you will discover that even you can draw heads from this angle.
Start by sketching a circle. Draw a horizontal line under it. The distance between the circle and the line is about half of the circle. Draw two more lines, one directly under the circle and the other about a quarter of the circle at the bottom. These are where the eyes will go.
Divide three quarter of the figure with a vertical curve from the top of the circle to the line below the circle like you see in the image.
Now let’s decide where the eyes will go. The eye on the right will have its normal shape and size. However the second eye will be compressed and change in shape because it will be viewed from a three quarter angle. Leave an eye space in the middle. So just make space for three. This was explained in the anime eye tutorial here.
Join the two top lines on the left of the figure with a small curve. This dip is where the left jaw will begin.
From the dip draw a big soft curve for the first jaw and chin that meets the line under the circle. Now on the other side, draw the right cheek from the chin like so.
Draw a slight slant from the cheek which will meet the ear. Place the nose at the vertical curve. Notice this is not exactly in the center of the face from this angle like in the face front view.
After adding the nose and frames for where the eyes will go, this makes it easier to place the ear. It goes from the top of the eye to the bottom or tip of the nose.
The mouth is just below the nose. The neck begins behind the ear and passes the chin.
Now that we have most of the features on her head, let’s do the eyes. What’s your style? Make that decision and add them in. Like we’ve discussed before, the eye on the left is smaller because a part of it is hidden by the nose. Don’t forget the eyebrows. Add them above the top line.
And in the end I’ve added some hair. Check out the hair tutorial here. Wait! Was that an unintentional pun? I hope you enjoyed this anime head tutorial. Now I want you to draw it again and this time use a different style of eyes. Also, three quarter body guide available here.
