Hey, welcome to another step by step drawing lesson. In this post you’re about to see an easy anime side view body tutorial otherwise known as a profile view.
Before we begin, if you’re drawing traditionally, use a light pencil for the guidelines and frames of the body. And don’t forget to press lightly on that pencil. You won’t always need to use guidelines; use them until you’re comfortable drawing the anatomy viewed from the side without them.
When I’m drawing anime from a side angle, I start with the head and neck. This is the tutorial for drawing the side of a face. Then, draw a line in the center of the head going down. And horizontal lines representing 6 heads which is how tall this character will be. By the way, this is going to be an anime girl and since I’m drawing her from the side, I add two more vertical lines around the same width as the head. You will later see how these extra lines help to place the body parts from this angle.
The chest is about one head in length. Remember that each horizontal line represents the length of a head. This is the shape used for the chest. Think of it as an egg turned like that.
This curve starting from the back of her neck will help place the hip and mid sections in the side view. Draw the hip tilted to the front like so. Now you can see where the tummy should be. Draw it as you see here.
Next add a curve on the hip to make it look like she is wearing an underwear. Now we’ll draw the thigh. To do this easily, first place a circle for the knee just below the fourth head. Then use the curve on the hip as a guide to attach the thigh to the knee. Note how the thigh curves out in the front. Only one of each body parts will be visible from the side. It’s not always like that though.
Between the back of her thigh and hip, draw her butt. It’s a tiny triangle. Now on to the leg. First add a circle as the ankle like you see in the image and then attach the leg to it from the knee. Notice how the leg curves inward at the front? And that bulge in the back is the calf. Next, draw her foot with the mini foot guide.
The upper arm to elbow align with the bottom of the chest. Circles represent the elbow and wrist. In this pose the lower arm is slightly raised and the hand is resting on the upper part of her thigh. Finally add the frame for the breast.
The final stage is the fun part. Use the frames as a guide to outline and add details to the body. First remove the guidelines and lower the opacity on the frames layer.
Outline and add details to the head and neck. Then just follow the frame to line the upper arm, chest and breast as shown in the drawing.
Draw the stomach and tummy. When viewing a girl’s body from the side, there is usually a dip where the navel is and a slight bulge on the tummy. Flesh out her lower arm and the rest of her back including the hip and butt.
Continue adding lines to her hand, fingers, thigh and leg.
Then finally, draw her foot. Put some hair on her head. Hair tutorial coming soon.
Then get rid of the frame. You can later add some clothes and colors if you wish.
Well done! Now you know how to draw anime side view. If you haven’t done so already, you should also check out the body proportions tutorials on how to draw anime from the front and three quarter view.
