Welcome to this anime background tutorial where you’ll be learning how to paint a sky and clouds in this video.
The best way to learn to paint the sky is to go outside and observe. Look up at the sky on a sunny day, on a cloudy day, in the mornings and in the evenings. That’s your best reference.
This is a digital sky painting tut and I’m using Paint Tool Sai. You can use Photoshop or any other digital software you want to along with a graphics pen tablet with pressure sensitivity. Try these free painting tools.
The first thing I do is pick the colors for the sky and clouds. It can be any colors you wish. It’s your imagination. I’m going to be painting a blue sky.
So, I’m going to choose my blues and the colors that I’m using to paint the clouds are mostly unsaturated blues and grays. This is the palette that I’m working with.
I’m using five different blues, since the sky is never just one flat color. It has a gradient look to it. This is how I achieve that look. Use the bucket tool to fill the entire canvas with the base color which is this blue-gray. Then I take the other shades and lay them down with a plain brush from lightest to the darkest shade. The darkest blue is at the top.
Now color pick the first hue i.e. the blue-gray. Then use the blend brush to blend it into the color next to it. Do this for the remaining colors. It should look something like this after.
How to Paint a Cloudy Sky
The sky is ready. Time to draw and paint the clouds. Look here how I add shades to the clouds step by step.
Clouds aren’t just white, and in your mind they can be any colors you want them to be. First use the plain brush to Paint the base hue for the clouds with gray. Paint in a circular motion like you see in the video. You can choose where you want to put your clouds. I’m going to start by painting some on the bottom of the canvas.
Then add a lighter color using the clouds brush (or a similar one) and go in a circular motion. At times you’ll press lightly on the brush and at other times, press slightly hard. The harder you press, the more color you get. You can use the clouds blend brush to blend it.
Paint some more cloud silhouettes in other areas and add color to it again. When you observe the sky outside you will notice that clouds vary in size and shapes.
Apply a shade of blue to the clouds. Remember to shade in a circular motion. Just shade in different areas where needed and then blur with the clouds blend brush.
There will be highlights on areas of the clouds where the light hits. Take a bright color and paint over the light areas. In this case I imagine that my light source is mainly in the top area.
Finally, take the last blue shade from the clouds palette and paint over the bottom of the clouds and maybe a little in other areas as well and carefully blend it in. And we are done.
